Believe it or not, one of the most common areas for mold growth is in the attic of our homes. Attics are typically a place we do not spend a lot of time in therefore are easily forgotten about. Unfortunately, when we do peek up there, it can be a big surprise to find mold in the attic.
What to do next?
First of all, understand you are not alone – over 50% of homes contain mold in the attic and it is very common.
Mold needs the right ingredients to start growing and attics that are not properly insulated and ventilated provide just that;
- Organic Material (wood sheathing and joists)
- Lack of air flow (improper ventilation)
- A water source (condensation from improper insulation and ventilation).
Second, contact a mold removal specialist to come and take a further look at the situation. At Canada’s Restoration Services we have years of experience and knowledge when it comes to the safe and proper removal of mold in attics. What does mold in the attic look like?
The typically signs of mold in the attic is black discoloration on the sheathing or studs/joists. Sometimes the mold may have a white-powdery look to it as well.
How to prevent Mold Growth in the Attic
As mentioned above, mold needs three ingredients to grow; a food source (organic material), a water source and lack of airflow. When given all three of these, it is almost impossible to prevent mold.
If mold is present, a mold removal company will need to perform mold remediation to remove of all the mold. After that, the attic needs to be checked for the following things:
- Roof Leaks
- Improper Insulation – too much or too little
- Improper Ventilation – too much or too little
- Improperly installed exhaust vents
One or several of the above can be the culprits of the mold growth. Typically, an insulation company is the right avenue to fix the source unless a rook leak is present, then a roofer is needed.
