The Kahnawake Mohawk Territory is a reserve of the traditionally Iroquoian-speaking Mohawk nation on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River across from the island of Montreal. Kahnawake's territory spans over an area of 50 square km. The Kahnawake population totals around 8500 people. However some of their residents live off of the reserve. Kahnawake residents originally spoke their Mohawk language, but today a lot of them speak English and some speak French. The Mohawk nation played a major role in the war of 1812, the Mohawk warriors along with the French Canadian Soldiers and under the British Government successfully defending their land and defeating the Americans. Kahnawake is located at the southwest shore where the St. Lawrence River. In their native language they describe their territory as “on, or by the rapids.” They are rich in their ancient history and traditions, and beautiful art and are a very kind people.
