2022 Updates to Canada's Asbestos Ban
Posted in Asbestos Removal, on January 26, 2022
In the early 1990s, the use of asbestos fibres in the construction industry began to phase out across Canada, as health professionals linked several illnesses such as malignant mesothelioma cancer to exposure to the mineral. As a result, asbestos removal in Edmonton increased and in 2016, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his government’s commitment to banning asbestos, and the Canadian Government published the Prohibition of Asbestos and Products Containing Asbestos Regulations in 2018. 2022 is a year that will see increased restrictions around the servicing of asbestos-containing equipment.
Unfortunately, even before the government moved towards phasing out asbestos, the mineral still found its way into hundreds of thousands of commercial and residential buildings across the country. Regular asbestos testing in Edmonton at Canada’s Restoration Services continues to find the mineral lingering in such buildings to this day, which underscores the importance of asbestos removal in Edmonton.
What’s Changing with Asbestos Removal in 2022
By December 2018, the Prohibition of Asbestos and Products Containing Asbestos Regulations was in full effect. With some exclusions, this new measure prohibited the import, sale and use of asbestos, as well as the manufacture, import, sale and use of asbestos-containing products.
After Dec. 31, 2022, the use of asbestos-containing products to service equipment in a nuclear facility and to service military equipment will be prohibited, unless a permit has been issued. However, the mandate still allows asbestos use if there isn’t a viable alternative.
The last stage in the implementation of these regulations comes in 2029, where the import and use of asbestos in chlor-alkali facilities will be prohibited.
The Future Of Asbestos In Canada
Despite these measures, they don’t apply to asbestos that has already been integrated into structure, infrastructure or products before the day the regulation was implemented, which was Dec. 30, 2018. So, while the sale, import and use of asbestos is being phased out in Canada, this doesn’t mean the same for asbestos removal in Edmonton. Canada’s Restoration Services understands that that service, along with asbestos testing in Edmonton, plays a vital role in phasing out asbestos entirely.
Asbestos can still be found in several parts that make up a commercial or residential home, especially those built in the early or mid 20th century. This includes insulation, ceiling tiles, flooring and asbestos-containing cement. The passage of time or renovations on your property can easily disturb the minerals hidden in such materials, which is why it’s important to seek professional assistance in asbestos testing in Edmonton to confirm if asbestos is present on your property or not.
