Asbestos Testing & Removal

What is an ACM?

ACMs refer to asbestos-containing materials that contain more than 0.5% concentration of asbestos. The term is used to describe building materials containing a form of the mineral asbestos, either because of how it was mined or manufactured. Materials for construction were often manufactured with asbestos to fortify the materials, be it drywall, flooring, pipe wraps, or any number of others. ACMs were popular for buildings in the mid-to-late 20th century because they would be stronger, more durable, and fire-resistant.

Types of Asbestos-Containing Materials

There are two categories in which asbestos-containing materials can fall: friable and non-friable.

  • Friable materials are typically in a decaying condition or can easily crumble and break. Because of these qualities, ACMs that are friable require immediate and professional asbestos removal in Toronto to be compliant with local laws and safety regulations.
  • Non-friable materials are more solid materials and do not crumble without intervention. However, they’re still a hazard and can cause airborne fibres when cut, sawn, hammered, or broken.

What Materials Typically Can Contain Asbestos

While asbestos was used in a wide range of building materials and consumer goods, the most common construction materials with significant percentages of asbestos in their makeup include and require asbestos removal in Toronto:

  • Drywall
  • Gypsum Board
  • Popcorn Ceilings
  • Pipe and Duct Wrap
  • Vinyl, Linoleum, or Laminate Flooring
  • Vermiculite Insulation
  • Water Heaters
  • Ceiling Tiles

In most cases, these materials only pose a risk if they were manufactured or installed in and around the 1980s. If you suspect that this fits your property, contact a certified and professional contractor, like Canada’s Restoration Services, for asbestos removal services near you.
