How Fast Does Mold Grow?

A common question surrounding mold in households is “how fast can mold grow?”

We all know Mold can be detrimental to our health, it grows behind walls and in ceiling spaces, under carpets and below floor boards, typically growing unnoticed and without restraint.  Unfortunately, most molds grow at temperatures that humans prefer, making our home the perfect place for them to thrive.

So how fast is mold growing? 

Mold grows fast. Mold can grow within 24 hours.

What will determine the speed of mold growth?

• Air flow
• Humidity
• Temperature (usually above 3deg. C)
• What organic material is actually wet ( e.g. mold grows faster on dry wall than wood)

If mold is clearly visible then it is growing and will reproduce by releasing spores that settle in surrounding area or close by if allowed to aerate. Under perfect conditions mold colonies can grow at 1sq inch per day and cover surface areas of several square feet in less than a week
 

Other common questions: can it still grow in the wintertime? If I can’t see mold, does it still grow?
Mold can grow safely in our refrigerator at temperatures below 4deg. Celsius, we’ve all witnessed this before. So the assumption that mold doesn’t grow in the winter time is certainly untrue. It is agreed in the wider scientific community that common household mold will not grow outdoors at -15deg. C though temperatures rarely drop below 5deg. C in the home, even in the coldest and darkest of basements.
