Asbestos was commonly used in building materials between the 1930’s to the late 1970’s for its sound absorption, durability and fire retardant properties. These characteristics, plus its affordability, made it the prime material to use for manufacturers and builders. Once the health affects became known, it was banned from being used but many older homes may still contain asbestos in certain building materials within the home.

Asbestos materials due have certain characteristics that can be identified with the human eye (familiarity of products and styles) however, the only way to know 100% if asbestos is present is to have the material tested.

A sample of the material must be taken to a third party lab where they can test and analyze to see if asbestos is present along with what type and the percentage.

When it comes to building materials - Asbestos was best used as insulation. It can be found in walls, ceilings and attics or wrapped around heating systems such as duct work and plumbing pipes. It was also often mixed with other materials, making it commonly found in many household items such as drywall and plaster compounds, vinyl floor tiles, ceiling tiles and exterior siding, shingles and caulking.

Materials containing asbestos fibers are highly hazardous when the conditions begin to degrade and become disturbed. Monitoring the conditions of any material containing asbestos is highly recommended to ensure it does not become airborne.  If the product has deteriorated, it is essential to not to further disturb it and have a certified Asbestos expert inspect your home immediately and remove the asbestos properly and return your property to a safe environment.

Removal of asbestos is a very complex and extensive job. It must be done by an experienced and certified contractor. When disturbing an asbestos product, extreme precautions must be taken to protect the worker and those within the environment from breathing in the fibers.

A certified company must be used to ensure these steps are taken and the ensure the safety of those living in the property.

Our technicians use full containment under negative pressure, decontamination chambers and showers that are vital in order to safeguard everyone in the successful removal process of Asbestos fibers and Vermiculite Insulation removal. This includes: Protective suits, Shoe Covers, Full Face Respirators and Double Gloves. The materials are first completely wet with a binding agent and continually sprayed throughout the removal process to ensure they remain wet and the Asbestos Fibers/Asbestos Dust are not able to become airborne. All wet materials and debris are immediately placed in caution bags and sealed. All garbage is removed safely and carefully from the premises and brought to the appropriate facilities for Disposal of Asbestos Materials.

While some asbestos fibres are more dangerous than others, all pose serious health risks when an individual is exposed to. Asbestos fibres can be released through various ways, one being; after repairs, maintenance and renovations, causing a disturbance in asbestos-containing structural materials. The damage to someone’s health from exposure to the fibres is dependent on a few variables:

  • amount of asbestos fibres in the air
  • how long your exposure lasts
  • how often you were exposed
  • the size of the asbestos fibres inhaled
  • the amount of time since your first exposure
  • the type of asbestos fibre

Depending on the combination of these factors, health risks could range from mild to severe. The main concern is the damage it causes to lungs; once the fibres get lodged, they can impair lung function. Health risks that often have been observed in individuals exposed to long term asbestos exposure include:

  • asbestosis - a scarring of the lungs that makes breathing difficult
  • mesothelioma - an otherwise rare cancer of the lining of the chest or abdominal cavity
  • lung cancer
  • cancer of the larynx
  •  ovarian cancer
